In at least one case they did "reconstruct" the necessary plumbing. In most cases they are born with serious internal organ defects that are inconsistent with life. There are very few survivors. (It's not nearly as glamorous as the name implies.)

Ha, see this is a good question. According to 'archives' and mythology, a mermaid can split her tail (kinda like legs ;) the vagina's between there. Check out the Starbucks logo, it's a little cropped out but it IS a mermaid with a split tail. Not sure about a mermale though. Maybe sperm shoots out of his finger.
