My niece came to live with me. She has never been to dentist or md. She is so scared of going that the mention of it brings a long panaick attack. Any ideas on how to handle this?

At 16, I had never been to the dentist either and I heard heard all the horror stories kids love to tell. When my grandma took me it was to her cousin who was the family dentist. He found 4 cavities, 1 in each quadrant (all molars) and poked his sharp little probe into them to "show" them to me. It hurt!
Next he got out the drill and informed me that he couldn't give me anything for pain because you can't numb both top and bottom. I didn't argue because I thought it was normal to have pain from the dentist. He drilled out all four teeth with no pain meds then stepped back and actually laughed saying, "I've got this girl sweating!" I wanted to kick him.
To this day I think he was a sick sadist. When he worked on my grandma's tooth he gave her a shot. I never returned to him but I did learn that most dentists aren't like that. Still, many years later, I still have to tell dentists that I am afraid and to please do whatever it takes to prevent pain. Then I tell them why and they always make sure I'm not hurt.
