Wait a minute! Hold on! I really hate time travel conundrums. Don't get me wrong, the new movie was really enjoyable. I am surprised at the amount of young people that enjoyed the screening and still understood all of the inside jokes that referred to the original series. And, Holy Cow! the Spock and Uhura kissing was really hot.
If I hadn't watched every original episode over and over then I don't think this movie would have stood on its own. Yet, I watched the movie with a bunch of 18 year olds that were born after the original series was dead and gone but they still understood the movie and were cheering at the end.
I feel that this movie was like reading a "what if?" comic book that could change everything in the universe yet the universe would still stay the same when the book was done. But, this book remains open and the universe is still in limbo.
Who is J.J. Abrams to change the whole Star Trek universe? But, who is J.J. Abrams to not change the Star Trek universe? The past is the past and cannot be changed. The future is the future and maybe or maybe not be changed. At least now we can write a whole new story for our favorite charachters and still be open.

Imho their are just too many things in the new Star Trek films that don't make sene, e.g. why should a small Change in the past make the federation built a ship, which Looks almost the sam from the exterior, but is twice as big and has an enigneering section that Looks like a brewery? (the answer on the brewery question is of course: because they filmed the Engineering scenes in a brewery to save Money on props)
Also, imho they are (just like many new movies) too much focused on special effects and contain not much plot. A good movie should contain effects to tell a Story, not just be blown up with special effects just because some People like that.
But a movie which relies mainly on the plot is a risk, because it is hard top predict if the audience likes a certain plot (a good example for this is the first Star Trek of the original movies). Special effects focused movies always sell well, if the effects are done in a decent quality.
Also I don't like the Spock-Uhura thing, because it doesn't make sense, the TOS Spocjk would never something unlogical like having this relationship with Uhura.
