The lowest point on earth is the shore of the Dead Sea, on the border of Israel and Jordan, at about 1,300 feet (400 meters) below sea level. (The actual height varies, depending on the water level.) By comparison, Death Valley, the lowest point in the western hemisphere, is only 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level. Nothing larger than bacteria lives in the Dead Sea, due to its high salt concentration, about 10 ten times the concentration of salt in seawater.
