Bill Fries and Chip Davis.
Bill Fries was an executive at an advertising firm in Omaha, Nebraska, and Chip Davis was a young musician hired by Fries to write jingles. Together they created an ad campaign for the Metz Baking Company to promote their Old Home Bread brand. Fries provided the lyrics and the voice of the mythical C.W. McCall, and Davis wrote the music.
The commercials were so successful the pair went on to record a number of albums, the second of which featured their biggest hit, "Convoy". "Convoy" sold over 10 million copies, inspired a feature film starring Kris Kristofferson and Ali MacGraw, and led to Davis being named the Country Music Writer of the Year for 1976.
Today Bill Fries is retired, while Chip Davis is better known for his "other" project, Mannheim Steamroller.
