When King Charles I granted the colony to George Calvert, First Lord of Baltimore, he asked two things in return. The first was an annual "rent" of two Indian arrowheads. The second was that the new colony be named in honor of his wife, Henrietta Maria.
This was a fitting namesake. Queen Henrietta Maria was a descendent of both the Bourbon kings of France and the Medici family of Florence, and as such was Roman Catholic. While being married to the king had certain advantages (at least until he was executed, but that's another story), life for other Roman Catholics was decidedly difficult in protestant-dominated England. A fact known firsthand to George Calvert, himself a convert to Catholicism. Not surprisingly, one of the founding principles of Maryland was religious tolerance, particularly for English Catholics.
