ANSWER


Originally, they were horse drawn wagons used to carry people and their luggage to and from the train station, thus the name "station wagon". When horse-and-buggies were replaced by automobiles, the term was transferred, and it came to mean a car capable of carrying out the same task. The first "modern" station wagon was the 1929 Ford Model A Station Wagon, pictured below...
