Today the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), working with US Attorney's offices in Pennsylvania and Iowa, launched a series of raids against companies which sell bongs and other drug paraphernalia on the Internet. The Pennsylvania operation was called "Operation Pipe Dreams", while the Iowa operation was called "Operation Headhunter". Here are some of the quotes from today's action...

-- John Ashcroft, US Attorney General
"At a time when the rest of the country is worried about terrorism, this attorney general is going after people who sell pipes."
-- Keith Stroup, founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML)
"No one would possibly use these items for smoking tobacco."
-- Mary Beth Buchanan, US attorney in Pittsburgh involved in Operation Pipe Dreams
"It would be more logical ... to prosecute people who sell beer mugs because of the poison consumed in them."
-- Ethan Nadelmann, of the Drug Policy Alliance
"This is a devastating blow to the drug paraphernalia business."
-- John Walters, White House drug czar.
"Okay, damn, you just reached Chong Glass."
-- Tommy Chong, on the answering machine at Chong Glass. Tommy wasn't taking phone calls today.
