Donald Miller of Lafayette, California thought it would be cute to register his toy poodle as a Republican. For two years the little dog named Barnabas was a registered Republican, and went to the polls with his owner, although Miller never let the poodle actually vote, according to Reuters.
Then came the day the poodle was summonned for jury duty. That was when Miller thought it would be a good idea to go to the newspapers with his story of the "alarming" laxity of the voter registration process. Nice try. Miller is now facing misdemeanor fraud charges.

follow-up...
The AP reported today that Donald Miller plead guilty to a misdemeanor fraud charge and was fined $250.
When the dog Barnabas was summonned for jury duty, Miller returned it with the following reply, "I have a short attention span, I have to go to the bathroom quite often and besides, I'm a dog." Fortunately for him, there was no additional fine for being a smart-ass.
