Jumping frogs get reprieve

Buk Friday, February 7, 2003 at 2:54 PM

You may recall several weeks ago we reported the plight of the frogs used in the Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee.  It seems that while it is not illegal to capture frogs from the wild to use in the contest, it is illegal to release frogs back into the wild.  This left fair organizers with quite a delimna about what to do with over 2,000 frogs used in the contest.

Fortunately, the AP reports today, there is a little-known loophole in the California Fish and Game Code which specifically exempts frogs used in jumping contests.  Contestants are now free to release their frogs back into the wild without fear of facing the proscribed $5,000 fine and possibility of one year in jail.

(There was no comment from the French Foreign Ministry.)
