Conker Bashing

Curtis Friday, October 11, 2002 at 2:01 PM

It's time once again for the annual World Conker Championship.

Sometimes I just don't understand the British, but yet, I'm intrigued...

Apparently a "conker" is some sort of chestnut.  And "conker bashing" is the act of tying a string to the chestnut and whacking it against a competitors similarly strung chestnut.

(I'll pause here for a moment to allow you to make up your own jokes.)

And apparently this is a popular enough activity to warrant a world championship.  The report I read said, and I quote, "up to 400 competitors already signed up to bash each others conkers on the picturesque village green of Ashton".

(Yeah, I should pause again here.)

Conker corking?

It seems that serious conker bashers will often do things to treat their conker to give them an edge in the competition.  To keep things fair, the World Conker Championship organizers will give all competitors untreated conkers for the competition.

All in all it sounds like a lovely afternoon... Hanging out on the village green just bashing your conkers.
