The truth about the Colorado wildfire...

Buk Monday, June 17, 2002 at 3:00 PM

This year's wildfire in Colorado is one of history's worst.  So far it has burned over 100,000 acres, destroyed 22 homes, displaced over 5,000 people, and cost nearly $7 million to fight it, according to reports from the AP.

Now we know how it was started.  Turns out forest ranger Terry Barton was burning a letter from her ex-husband and... Well, you know the rest.

Let's say that one again, just to let it sink in... The fire was started by a forest ranger (yes, a forest ranger) who was burning a letter from her ex.  I guess she showed him.

(Gee, wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall at her next performance review?)

Let's follow up a little bit here... what was Terry supposed to be doing when she was burning letters from her ex?

At the time, she was assigned to patrol the Pike National Forest to enforce a fire ban imposed because of a drought.
