National Geographic aired an interesting special on Saddam right after he was hanged.  Seems the Saddam years were quite the regin of terror.  The attempted extermination of the Kurds with chemical weapons was particularly disturbing.  Even more disturbing was US complicity and support for his government prior to the first Gulf War.

(Of course the US propped up some pretty nasty characters all around the world for the sake of maintaining a Cold War balance of power with the Soviets.  The US won the Cold War, and I think most would agree that is generally a good thing [especially eastern Europe], but it came at a high price.  Iraq is just one particularly explosive example.  We will be dealing with the fallout for decades.)
